Manufacturer's Training

Manufacturer's Training

Since product knowledge is critical to our success as a distributor, manufacturers’ training is an important learning tool for our team.

Manufacturer representatives frequently join us onsite for local “lunch and learn” programs to discuss new and changing products and give demonstrations. Most of these programs are open for customers to attend as well.

Our manufacturer partners also conduct online courses, provide much of the coursework for Summit University, and manage intensive manufacturers' schools to train you on their entire product line.

Electrical Products Education Course (EPEC)

Electrical Products Education Course (EPEC)

The electrical industry’s hallmark training program combines extensive product knowledge with real-world applications, which will help you provide quick and accurate solutions to customers.

The Electrical Products Education Course, or EPEC, is a three-tiered, self-study course designed and administered by the National Association of Electrical Distributors (NAED). The entire course takes approximately two years to complete, where your mastery of the content is demonstrated after each level—bronze, silver, and gold.

EPEC represents a high standard of professional competence and details the vast array of products stocked and sold by electrical distributors and how our customers use them. Once you’ve successfully completed all three levels, you’ve acquired the equivalent of 10 years of industry experience.

Summit’s commitment to learning shines through in our associates, who have the highest percentage of EPEC gold level graduates than any other electrical distributor in the nation. A Summit associate was also among the first in the industry to complete NAED’s new EPEC Lighting Course.

Profit Sharing and Retirement

Profit Sharing and Retirement

Just as Summit has a vision for our future, we want to help you plan for yours. When you participate in our 401(k) Retirement Savings Plan, your pre-tax contributions reduce your taxable income and any earnings accumulate tax-free until you withdraw them. You can also choose a Roth plan and make post-tax contributions so any earnings are not taxable. Whichever plan you select, you’ll be 100% vested in your contributions. If you have funds from other 401(k) or IRA plans, you have the option to roll them over to Summit’s plan.

You can also accrue dollars for your retirement with Summit’s Retirement Profit Sharing Plan—our qualified employer-contributed pension plan where no matching funds are required.

Summit wants you to share in the profits generated from your hard work, so we provide a variable incentive payout based on your location’s monthly profitability. Our Incentive Profit Sharing Plan encourages our team to work together to increase profits and decrease expenses and is a direct benefit of a successful sales month. Most associates are eligible to participate.

Getting Discovered

Our application asks about your background and professional experience. Once our recruiting team reviews your information, you may be asked to complete up to three additional assessments.

  • The personality assessment helps us learn about your approach to your work, your leadership style, selling or influencing style, and how we could help you reach your full potential.
  • The second assessment measures your cognitive processing speed and tells us how quickly you perceive, assimilate, and use new information. Many Summit positions require you to quickly learn very technical information, and this test shows if those roles are suited to you.
  • Our numbers perception test measures your speed and accuracy at recognizing part numbers from our warehouse. With over 100,000 individual products in our database, this skill is essential for warehouse, sales, and inventory management positions.
  • Additional assessments for upper-level positions may be required at any point during the hiring process.

After your assessment results are reviewed, you may be invited to interview with a member of our recruiting team. This is your opportunity to share your background and skillsets with us and demonstrate how your real-life experiences represent Summit’s values.

You can expect to complete a series of additional interviews with Summit's service center management and other company leaders. You may also receive a tour of your prospective Summit facility and have an opportunity to meet associates who could be working alongside you.

Employment Offer

When you show us what a great addition you’ll make to our team, we’ll extend a formal offer of employment.
