A pilot program with a goal of using electricity more efficiently by replacing street lights with LED has been in place since October 2013 in one area of Laredo due to an agreement between the city and AEP electric utility. Cities that have reported savings in electricity by switching to LED technology include Los Angeles and Raleigh, N.C. Other cities like Las Vegas, Seattle and Austin are in the process of transitioning to this type of lighting. The pilot program started, 2013, and will end on the same date in 2016.
