Energy Secretary Steven Chu used the Clinton Global Initiative conference in Chicago to announce today that 14 businesses, developers, financial organizations and local governments had agreed to take part in the Obama administration's Better Buildings Initiative http://www1.eere.energy.gov/buildings/betterbuildings/ seeking private-sector investment in commercial building energy and water efficiency upgrades. The goal is to make the nation's commercial buildings 20 percent more efficient over the next decade. Chu said all buildings now consume about 40 percent of the energy used in the USA. Reductions in energy use, he said, could save about $40 billion a year in energy bills.
